Ditching Kibble: 7 Reasons Why You Should NEVER Feed It To Your Dogs

holistic dog food compared to kibble

Friends don’t let friends eat garbage!

There, I said it and I’ve known for a while – it’s time to share it with those who don’t know! Feeding your dog dry dog food, also known as kibble is super bad for them. In fact, it may even be the cause of some major health issues your dog may have or could develop throughout their lifetime.

So why are so aunjweattpeople feeding their dogs washA kibble?

What is it, and why are so many people being hoaxed into thinking that kibble is good for their dogs? Sure it’s convenient and pretty cheap, but there is also a good chance that it will be detrimental to your dog’s health.

According to Meriam Webster, here’s the definition of kibble: Coarsely ground meal or grain typically used as animal feed especiallysmall, dry pellets of processed food for pets (such as dogs and cats).

If that didn’t disturb you, then you should read it again. Why do so many supposed pet-loving companies think that it’s OK to feed our pets processed food-like substances that are only disguised to be healthy with a fancy label?

Why do so many people feed their dogs kibble?

This is something that isn’t talked about enough in the dog world. So don’t be too hard on yourself for not knowing. We didn’t know either until we found out that hard way.  You walk down the pet aisle and pick the top quality kibble thinking you chose the best option for your dog and maybe you did. Maybe you picked out the kibble that seemed to be the least offensive, or seemingly the “best” and most “healthy” option.

We always knew that it was important to feed our dog a balanced healthy diet, but it wasn’t until we found out that Henna had cancerous mast cell tumors that we knew just how important it was.

Prior to Henna’s diagnoses, we used to feed her kibble. We would walk up and down the aisle of the pet store and spend so much time comparing the labels on the bags of different brands of dry dog food to see which one was THE BEST. However, if you’d ask us what we fed Henna, we’d be confident in saying that we fed her the best. The best of the worst, that is.

Why is kibble actually so bad?

Do you ever wonder what’s really in your dog’s food? Like how is it possible that an entire balanced meal is transformed into hard crunchy poop colored bits of “food”? As a dog parent, it’s our duty to make sure that our fur babies get the best care, and that should start with their food.

Kibble buyers are happy with the product because it is cheap, easily accessible, and storage is convenient. However, kibble is literally dried food pellets consisting of highly processed and synthetic ingredients that are likely going to be detrimental to your dog’s health. Unfortunately, there are actually a bunch of reasons why kibble is bad for your dog and the reality behind it is shocking.

Some dogs live through eating kibble products, but that doesn’t make it a good option. What if your dog could have lived several more years if they had been eating healthier diets? We want to do everything we can to ensure that our pup lives as long and healthy as possible.

Here are a few of the downsides to feeding your dog kibble:

High Heat & Over Processing

What a lot of people don’t know is that when the protein and starches are heated, acrylamides and heterocyclic amines are created – both of which are known to cause cancer. Kibble is usually cooked at a temperature ranging between 230-350 degrees, so there is really no way around these carcinogens being in your dog’s kibble.

Feed Grade Ingredients

The meat ingredients that are allowed to be used for dog food is disturbing. With no disclosure requirements, the meat source of pet food can be from non-slaughtered, diseased animals. The FDA claims the pet food high heat processing is designed to kill harmful bacteria but that doesn’t change that the meat was diseased and can spread illness.

Low Moisture

Are you wondering why your pup is always looking for water? Well, the answer to that could be found right in their bowl. As a low-moisture food product, feeding your dog kibble will make your pup very dehydrated. Over time, if your dog is in a constant state of dehydration, they can experience harmful side effects such as :

  • Lethargy/ low energy levels
  • Excessive panting
  • Dry eyes that appear to be sunken in
  • Dry gums
  • Dry nose
  • A loss of skin elasticity
  • A loss of appetite

Synthetic Ingredients

Since kibble loses so many nutrients due to the high heat it’s exposed to during the production phase, processed nutrients and synthetic flavor enhancers are added into the mix to replace what is lost. Many of these synthetic ingredients have been found to be carcinogenic ingredients such as acrylamides which has been proven in scientific studies.

Added Colors & Chemicals

Labeled as a “rainbow of risks” this report confirms that the dyes are dangerous to your dog’s health. According to the Center for Science in the Public Interest, these added colors and chemicals are associated with the development of cancer and hypersensitivity.

Bacteria Risk

Among the problems with kibble is the presence of bacteria, mycotoxins (produced from fungi), and storage mites that flourish in that environment. All of these can be associated with disease, inflammation, and the overall health of your pup.

When you feed your dogs kibble, you’re running the risk of feeding the bacteria and mycotoxins. When you feed them kibble that’s been opened for any length of time, you are likely feeding them rancid food. Once the big bag of kibble is opened, the fats in the food start to go bad.

So you may think you’re getting a bargain buying a huge bag of dog food, but it’s actually not the case. Over a long period of time, consuming kibble that has been opened for a while can lead to protein, fat, and vitamin deficiencies.

Toxins

Many grains found in your dog’s kibble often are contaminated with mold. This can happen as a result of bad growing and/or storing conditions which is pretty gross -I know. But beyond it being gross, it’s actually super dangerous and can produce aflatoxins- an extremely potent carcinogen that can harm your dog’s immune system, causing extreme health issues like liver and kidney failure, cancer, anemia, and premature death.

You may think you’re in the clear because your dog eats grain-free kibble. Not so fast, grain-free kibble still has a high carbohydrate content, leaving a potential for mold spores to sprout during storage, especially if stored in a moist environment or an open container.

Why It’s Time To Switch To Holistic Dog Food

It’s 2020 and it’s time to be in control of what your dog eats.
